الشعر بالنسبة لـ "سعد الثقفي" ليس ترفاُ ولا ضرباً من المتعة؛ بل تعبيراً عن الذات في لحظة نقائها، لغة وتصويراً وقولاً، ففي بعض "وجع" قصائد تكتنز بين دفتيها مدىً عاطفياً وانفعالاً عالياً، وكثابات تحيل إلى حالات حياتية صارخة ومحرضة انسلت عبر ما يسمى بالومضة الخاطفة، والمفعمة بالحميمية والدفء في انتقاءات جميلة معاشة؛ ذات إيقاعات متناغمة مع الوجع الإنساني الذي لا يقدرعلى تحمله إلا من كان شاعراً. يقول الشاعر في قصيدة بعنوان (رحلة): أمرَ وحدي على الأحزان تحملني، فعانقتني في جلَ وترحال/ أمرَ لا أحد يرنو إلى أحدٍ، حملت همَي من حالٍ إلى حالٍ/ والأربعون أشرأبت كيف أقبلها، هربت منها إليها، دون تسآل(...)/ يا أيها الشيب قد افرحتني فلقد أعدتني لبقايا فجري البالي.
وهكذا يخلق الشاعر الثقفي جواً عاماً ثيمته بعفوية فائقة عبر منظومة من صور تنضج من بين ثناياها ما يشكل أجواء القصيد.
قسَم الشاعر قصائد الديوان إلى مجموعات شعرية جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: 1- يوميات، 2- محطات، 3- قصائد جنوبية، 4- على ضفاف الشَط، 5- قراءة من النوتة الشخصية، 6- نصوص، 7- كيمياء، 8- قصائد من وحي الثورات.
