يشكل هذا الكتاب (مقاربات نقدية في المنجز الإبداعي؛ وهي قراءات للناقد سعد الثقفي لا تعتمد مدرسة نقدية بعينها، ولا توجهاً محدداً؛ بقدر ما تعكس تسليط الضوء على منجز ما إبداعي، ما بين قصيدة أو رواية أو قصة، تحتمل أكثر من وجهة نظر ...
والنصوص التي يحتويها هذا الكتاب كما يصفها الثقفي: ذات رموز شخصية مختلفة تختلف باختلاف شعرائها؛ فمن أدونيس الذي جعل هذا الرمز إسماً له إلى السيّاب الذي استمد رموزه من الطبيعة (القرية جيكور) إلى (خليل حاوي) في رحلته مع السندباد، وإلى رموز أخرى عند نازك وعبد الصبور وغيرهما". وكل هذه الرموز ما هي إلا رؤى خاصة بكل شاعر، أو قاص، رؤى ذاتية يصف من خلالها المعاناة الذاتية والروحية عنده والتي هي جزء من معاناة الإنسان على هذه الأرض.
يتألف الكتاب من ثلاثة فصول: الفصل الأول (قراءات متنوعة) ويضم: الصور التخيلية والرمز في الشعر العربي الحديث، دلالة الخلق والتكوين في قصيدة الخزاف ... الخ. أما الفصل الثاني فجاء بعنوان (مقاربات في المنجز الشعري) ويضم: تسعة قراءات منها: (خسران) الحازمي إلى تقنيات الإختزال الشعري في قصيدة التفعيلة لإبراهيم زولي، تهافت النهار، والدلالة القرآنية المتقدمة/ مقال للمؤلف ... الخ. أما الفصل الثلاث فاحتوى على (مقاربات في القصة والرواية) ويضم: الخيميائي، لقاء الشرق بالغرب، قراءة في مجموعة فوزي المطرفي القصصية، رواية العطر: قصة قاتل وقراءات أخرى.
