أصدر أحمد السِّباعيّ كتابه هذا في زمنين مختلفين، واتَّخَذَ في كلا الزَّمنيْن موقفين فنِّيَّنْ متباينيْن، ظَهَرَ القرَّاء على هذا الكتاب، حين نُشِرَ للمرَّة الأولى سنة 1374هـ، بعنوان هو (أبو زامل)، واتَّفق الكاتب والقارئ على أنَّ هذا الأَثَر "قصَّة"، وصنَّفه النُّقَّاد والمفهرسون في هذا الفنّ الأدبيّ النَّثْرِيّ، ثُمَّ رأى الكاتبُ، قبْل أن يتوفَّاه الله بعامين، أن يُبَدِّل العَقْد القرائيّ الَّذي أَبْرَمَه الكاتبُ، قبْل أن يتوفَّاه الله بعامين، أن يُبَدِّل العَقْد القرائيّ الَّذي أَبْرَمَه بين الكتاب والقارئ، فأخرج هذا الأَثَر عام 1402هـ، بعنوان مختلف جدّاً، هو (أيَّامي)، وقرأه القرَّاء، على وَفْق العَقْد الجديد، "سِيرةً ذاتيَّة"، وقَبِلَ النُّقَّاد هذا التَّغيير الجديد في "الجِنْس الأدبيّ"، ومعهم المفهرسون والورَّاقون.
أَدْخَلَ الكاتب على كتابه ضرُوُباً مِنَ التَّبديل، بَدَّل العنوان، وأضاف فُصُولاً جديدة، أصبح "جميلٌ" - بَطَل القِصَّة - في الطَّبعة الأولَى، "أحمدَ" - بَطَلَ السِّيرة الذَّاتية - في الطَّبعة الأخيرة، وصار "صالح" - أبو البطل - "محمَّداً"، وكأن المؤلِّف أراد أن يقول لقارئه: إنَّ ما تقرأه ليس قِصَّة، ولا رواية، إنَّما هو "سيرة ذاتيَّة"، على معهود ما ينشئه الأدباء ساعةَ يكتبون سِيَرَهًم الذَّاتيَّة، وأنَّ ما قَدَّرَهُ بعضُ النُّقَّاد، مِنْ قَبْلُ، حِينَ طابق بين بطل "أبو زامل" وحياة المؤلِّف أحمد السِّباعيّ كان صحيحاً، وربَّما أحَسَّ المؤلِّف، وقدْ طَعَنَ في السِّن، أنَّه آنَ له أن يتحدَّث عنْ نفسه، دون تلوين أوْ تمثيل، فكانتْ "أيَّامي" - بضمير المتكلِّم - تعبيراً عنْ عَقْد "السِّيرة الذَّاتيَّة"، دون أن يَتَكلَّف لها القرَّاء أو النُّقَّاد تصنيفاً يَعْدو بها بعيداً عنْ كتاب أراد له صاحبُه، قُبَيْلَ وفاته، أن يكون تعبيراً عنْ ذاته وضميره. - حسن محمَّد بافقيه
