الرواية بإسم إنريكو دي لوكي وهو ذاته الشاعر الإيطالي آري دي لوكا. لم يكن عليّ أن أسمّي ذلك اليوم قبل أن يحين الموعد. وربما يكون يومًا اعتياديًا يحمل في طياته أمورًا ضرورية كدراسة اللغة الإغريقية لكني لاأستلطف أفلاطون. كيف استطاع أن يكتب حوارات سقراط كلها؟ هل سجّل ملاحظاته في المساء كما أفعل بحكايات دون غايتانو أم أنه كان يحفظها عن ظهر قلب؟ أفلاطون كان محتالًا، يقوّل أستاذه والآخرين وجهة نظره الخاصة، وكان ظله يختبئ خلفهم. أهكذا يفعل الكاتب أيضًا؟ كلا، بل على الكاتب أن يكون أصغر من الماة التي يرويها، وأن يجعل القصة تبدو كأنها تفلتت منه إلى جميع الاتجاهات وأنه يحاول جمع مااستطاع منها. فيشعر القارئ بلذة التفاصيل الضائعة التي سقطت من أيدي الكاتب سهوًا. أما أفلاطون يأسر التاريخ خلف الأسوار ولايسمح لأي حياة مستقلة أن تهرب منه، فباتت محادثاته رتيبة تقتصر على ثنائية السؤال والجواب فقط.
