يتميز الطفل في بداية هذه المرحلة بسرعة الانفعال وحدته نتيجة لزيادة القيود التي تفرض على سلوكه من جراء تعامله مع الكبار والصغار وكثرة المعوقات التي تحول دون تحقيق رغباته، حيث يبدأ الصدام بين الطفل وبيئته في أول هذه المرحلة، وتبلغ شدة انفعالات الطفل كالفرح والخوف والغيرة والكراهية والانزعاج في نهاية السنة الثالثة بينما يشعر بالاستقرار في حياته الانفعالية نسبياً في سن الخامسة، بالرغم من غلبة العناد والمقاومة على سلوكه (1).
وتعتبر انفعالات الطفل وسيلته الأساسية في التعامل مع الآخرين، وخصوصاً قبل ان تنمو مهارة التعبير اللفظي لديه، ليعبر عن المطالب والحاجات والمشاعر، ويلاحظ ان الطاقة الانفعالية لدى الطفل تعبر عن نفسها في البداية بطريقة كلية عامة، ثم لا يلبث ان يحدث فيها نوع من التمايز والتخصيص تدريجياً، حيث يتميز الطفل في بداية هذه المرحلة بسرعة الأفعال والانفعال من حالة انفعالية الى حالة انفعالية اخرى، كما يبدأ في هذه السن الخوف والقلق من المدرسة او تقبل الذهاب إليها، والرغبة في التعليم تبعاً لما يتلقاه من اتجاهات وسلوك الاخرين المحيطين به نحو الدراسة .
