ومن هنا فقد انصبت جهود علماء النفس على دراسة النمو النفسي والانفعالي للطفل ولهم في ذلك اتجاهات متعددة فمنهم من يهتم بدراسة الطفل نفسه ومنهم من يعني بدراسة المجتمع ومؤسساته التي تشكل البيئة التي ينمو من خلالها الطفل.. وهذا الكتاب يركز بصورة رئيسية على دراسة النمو النفسي والانفعالي للطفل حيث يعرض لجميع الاتجاهات وخصوصاً الاتجاهات التي يمثلوها كل من فرويد وبياجيه وكلاين.
