فكرة المهدي والمهدوية لعبت دورًا كبيرًا في الإسلام من القرن الأول إلى اليوم. وسبب نجاحها يرجع إلى شيئين: الأول أن نفسية الناس تكره الظلم وتحب العدل, سنتهم في جميع الأزمنة والأمكنة, فإذا لم يتحقق العدل في زمنهم لأي سبب من الأسباب اشرأبت نفوسهم لحاكم عادل تتحقق فيه العدالة بجميع أشكالها, فمن الناس من لجأ إلى الخيال يعيش فيه وألف في ذلك اليوتوبيا أو المدن الفاضلة على حد تعبير الفارابي.
والثاني أن الدنيا في الشرق والغرب مملوءة ظلمًا وذلك في كل العصور, وقد حاول الناس كثيرًا أن يزيلوا الظلم عنهم ويعيشوا عيشة سعيدة في جو مليء بالعدل فلم يفلحوا, فلما لم يفلحوا أملوا فكان من أملهم إمام عادل, إن لم يأت اليوم فسيأتي غدًا, وسيملأ الأرض عدلًا, وستتحقق على يديه جميع الآمال. وكانت فكرة المهدية تحقق هذين الغرضين, وأردت أن أشرح هذه الفكرة وأتتبع تاريخها من أول عهدنا بها فكان هذا الكتيب.
