عند العودة إلى البدايات الأولى لتشكل ما نعرفه اليوم بالأرض الدنماركية، نجد أنفسنا أمام عالم مختلف تماماً عما نراه عليه هذا البلد في عصرنا الحالي. في المنطقة الشمالية من أوروبا، والتي تشمل ما يعرف اليوم بشبه جزيرة يوتلاند والجزر الدنماركية المحيطة بها، ظلت المنطقة موطناً للإنسان منذ عصور قديمة. تشير الاكتشافات الأثرية المتفرقة، والتي يوثقها عدد من الباحثين في المتحف الوطني الدنماركي، إلى وجود تجمعات سكانية بدائية ترجع للعصر الحجري القديم، لكنها كانت متناثرة في نطاقات ضيقة وأماكن يصعب تمييزها بالبقايا المادية، نظراً لطبيعة التغيرات المناخية والجغرافية العميقة التي تعاقبت على المنطقة.
