المخلاة تعني في اللغة ما يجعل فيه الخلي وهو العشب الرطب ثم أطلقت علي ما يجعل فيه الملف ويعلق في عنق الدابة، إلا أن العامة أطلقوها من قبيل التشبيه على الكيس يعلقه المتسول في رقبته ويضع فيه ما يجود به عليه المحسنون، ونحسب أن العاملي أراد هذا المعنى لمخلاته لأنه أطلق على كتابه الثاني اسم الكشكول، وهو لفظ آرامي يعني أيضاً الكيس الذي يجعله المتسول في رقبته. وكما في كيس المتسول من أشياء مركومة بعضها فوق بعض.
جاء كتاب العاملي وفيه جمع كل ما وقع عليه من مواعظ وحكم، ونوادر وأحاديث، وقصص وروايات، وركمها بعضها فوق بعض كركم المتاع، فجاء الكتاب متعته للقارئ المتمهل، وغير مجد لمن يتطلب شيئاً معيناً فيه.
إلا أن بين كيس المتسول وكتاب المخلاة تبايناً مهماً إن ما يجمعه المتسول في كيسه هو من فضلات الناس وسقط المتاع، أما العاملي فقد جود في ما جمع في مخلاته، وتخير من كل موضوع الحسن والأحسن، وبالرغم من نفاسة هذا الكتاب إلا أنه لم يلق الكثير من العناية، ولهذا اهتم "محمد خليل الباشا" بتنسيقه ولفهرسته هذا إلى جانب اهتمامه بتقسيم كل موضوع إلى جمل، تميزها الفواصل والنفط كما وأصناف للكتاب عدة فهارس: الأول تناول الموضوعات، والثاني الأعلام، الثالث الأشعار، والرابع الأماكن، والخامس الكتب، وكلها مرتبة على حروف الهجاء ويشير الرقم العربي فيها إلى الجوالة والرقم الهندي إلى الفقرة.
