أثار جدلا في 2007 عندما صرح ب "إن السود أقل ذكاء من البيض" و يعمل على برهنة ذلك علميا حسب ما صرح به يُذكر أن واتسون سبق أن أثار جدلا في الماضي عندما قال إنه يجب أن إعطاء المرأة حق إجهاض جنينها في حال استطاعت التجارب أن تثبت أن مثل ذلك الجنين قد يكون مثلي الجنس في المستقبل.
