سأقص في هذا الكتاب روايتي عن كيفية اكتشاف تركيب الحمض النووي، وقد حاولت في عملي هذا أن أشرح جو إنجلترا في الأعوام التالية للحرب مباشرة؛ حيث وقعت أكثر الحوادث أهمية. إن تقدم العلم- كما آمل أن يوضح هذا الكتاب- نادراً ما يتم بالطريقة المنطقية المستقيمة التي يتخيلها من لا يعمل في حقل العلم، ولكن خطواته إلى الأمام- أو إلى الخلف في بعض الأحايين- هي حوادث إنسانية تماماً، تلعب فيها الشخصيات والتقاليد الثقافية أدواراً هامة، ولقد حاولت كي أوضح هذا أن أتذكر انطباعاتي الأولى للوقائع والشخصيات الهامة، لم يكن غرضي أن أقدم تقييماً يأخذ في اعتباره الحقائق العديدة التي عرفتها بعد أن اكتشف التركيب، ورغم أن هذا الغرض الأخير قد يكون أكثر موضوعية، إلا أنه لا ينجح في أن ينقل روح مغامرة ميزها جهل الشباب، والثقة في أن الحقيقة- متى عرفت- لابد وأن تكون بسيطة، وأن تكون جميلة أيضاً، وعلى هذا فقد يبدو الكثير من التعليقات متحيزاً وغير منصف، ولكن هذا هو الحال دائماً مع الطريقة غير الكاملة والمتعجلة التي كثيراً ما يقرر الإنسان بها أن يحب أو أن يكره فكرة جديدة،أو شخصاً، وعلى أية حال فإن هذه الرواية تمثل الطريقة التي رأيت بها الأشياء في الفترة ما بين 1951،1953: الأفكار والناس وشخصي.
