الكوبرا.. أحدُ أكثر ثعابين العالم شُهْرَةً وانتِشارًا ورهبةً، لا تكادُ العَيْنُ تُخْطئُ تلك القامةَ المُنْتَصِبَة وذلك العُنُقَ العَرِيض، الذي يُضْفِي عليها مظهَرَ صولَجانٍ عتِيقٍ، يُطِلُّ المَوْتُ مِن رأسِه.. ولَعَلَّ فصائل الكوبرا لَيْسَت هي أخطر أنواع الثعابين على وجهِ الأرض، كما أنَّ سُمُومَها وإن كانَتْ مُمِيتةً وشَدِيدة الخطورة إلَّا أنَّها لَيْسَت الأخطَرَ على الإطلاق.. وأيضًا لَعَلَّ جنس الكوبرا الحقيقِيَّة بفصائلِه ليسَ هو الأضخَم أو الأطول بين أجناس الثعابين وفصائلِها.. إلَّا أنَّ لها مكانة خاصَّة عِند الإنسان في القدِيم والحَدِيث، حتَّى أنَّها عُبِدَتْ في غير شِرْعَةٍ مِن الثقافات القديمة.
بعضُ تلك الفصائل قد وَهَبَها الله قُدْرَةً عجيبةً على نَفْثِ سُمُومِها مِن مسافَةٍ كبيرة مِن دون الحاجَةِ إلى الاقتِرابِ مِن مُفتَرِسِيها ونَهْشِها.. آلِيَّةٌ عجيبةٌ مُفْزِعة، فالمَوْتُ يسِير مَعَها أينَمَا سَارَت، بَلْ لَعَلَّهُ يَصْدُرُ مِنها وهي لا تزَال بعِيدةً، وكأنَّها تهزَأُ بضَحايَاهَا، حِينَ تَبْصُقُ المَوْتَ في وُجُوهِهِم.. تلك هي أحد فصائل الكوبرا الباصِقة.. الكوبرا الحمراء الباصِقة Naja pallida.
