لطالمَا شكَّلَتِ الثعابين أكثر الألغاز الحَيَّة على وجهِ الأرض، فهي تضاهي في غرابتها وغموضها أكثر أنواع الأحياء المائِيَّةِ نُدْرَةً وغرابةً في قاع البحار والمُحِيطات، على الرُّغْمِ مِن أنَّ تلك الثعابين تعيش أمام ناظِرَيْنا على سطْحِ الأرْضِ وليسَ تحتها أو في أعماقِ بحارِها. ومِنْ عجائِب الثعابين التِّي كانت ولا تزالُ تشغل عقول الكثيرين مِن العامَّةِ والخاصَّةِ مِنَ العلماء والمُسْتَكْشِفِين على السَّوَاءِ هي أطوالُها الكبيرة وأوزانُها الرَّهِيبة، فالثعابين لا تمتلِك أطرافًا وتتحَرَّكُ وتأكلُ بشكلٍ عجِيب، ليس هذا فحسب، بل إنَّ بعض فصائلها يحمل قياساتٍ عجيبَةٍ مُتَطَرِّفة، وذلِك فيما يتعَلَّقُ بأطوالِها وأوزانِها، مِمَّا يزِيدُها خطورةً ورَهْبَةً في قلوبِ الخلائِقِ جميعِها.
ولَمَّا كَانَ الأمرُ يتعَلَّقُ بالثعابين، ثُمَّ بأطوالِها وأوزانِها، فقَد كَثُرَتْ الشائِعات، وانتَشَرَتْ القِيَاسَاتُ المُضَلِّلَةُ بَيْنَ النَّاس، وتَنَاقَلتْهَا الأجيال كما لَوْ كانَتْ معلوماتٍ ثابتَةً أكيدة، إلَّا أنَّ العِلْمَ وعالم الاستِكْشَاف كانَ لَهُ رأيٌ آخر..
