في روايته "القوزاق" يلقي ليوتو لسنوي بنفسه في مغامرة القوقاز. كان هذا الشعور الجديد الذي سيطر عليه وسط هؤلاء الناس الأجلاف الذين كان يلقاهم في طريقه حين زار القوقاز (1851) ولم يجد وجهاً من وجوه المقارنة بينهم وبين معارفه في موسكو.
وفي هذه الأثناء قرر ليو تولستوي أن يكتب شيئاً عن القوزاق، والحياة البدائية التي تحتل فيها الأهواء مكاناً كبيراً، فالحب يترقبه الموت، وهو ما شكل نغمة أساسية لدى تولستوي في روايةٍ ميلو درامية تحكي قصة الشاب لوكا شكا الذي فرَ من الخدمة العسكرية، طمعاً في أن برى محبوبته ماريانا، فإعتقل وحكم عليه بالإعدام. يحاول أولنين، الذي خطب ماريانا أثناء غيابه، أن ينقذه، ولكنه لا يفلح، ويعدم لوكا شكا رمياً بالرصاص، وتنتهي الرواية برحيل أولنين.
لقد كتب تولستوي: ".. أخذت أحب القوقاز حباً متأخراً لكنه قوي جداً. حقاً ما أجمل تلك البلاد المتوحشة التي يتحالف فيها تحالفاً غريباً، طافحاً بالشعر، أمران متعارضان أشد التعارض: الحرب والحرية".
يذكر أن رواية "القوزاق" وضع ليوتو لستوي هيكلها سنة 1852م، ونشرت أول مرة في مجلة "الرسول الروسي" في شهر كانون الثاني (يناير) 1863.
