الكتاب يتحدث عن شخص اسمه آدم فقد أبواه اثر حادثة ارهابية في الماضي، فسرق شيفرة تتعلق بآلة عبر الزمن عن طريق اختراق نظام منظمة سرية ليستعيد والديه، لكن المنظمة كشفت موقع الاختراق و أرسلت له العميلة سارة لكي تتقرب منه و تعرف مكان الشيفرة و هل هو جاسوس، لكنها تفشل في المهمة، فتضطر المنظمة لاختطافه و صعقه بالكرسي الكهربائي لكن ظل صامدا و متحملا للٱلم فقد كان فيما مضى جنديا و تعرض لما هو أقسى من هذا التعديب في تدريباته العسكرية، و عندما لم ينجح هذا الأمر قاموا باخضاعه لمحاكاة عقلية و تلاعبوا بذكرياته في العالم الوهمي و خلقوا له حياة مثالية مع سارة على أساس زوجته و ابنه ستيف، لكي يخضع لضغط نفسي و يخاف أن يخسر عائلته و يعترف بمكان الشيفرة و عن خلفيته و سبب اختراقه للمنظمة، و عندما اختطفوا ابنه الوهمي و كان على وشك الاعتراف قتلته سارة ليستيقظ في العالم الحقيقي لأنها ندمت و تراجعت و أحست أن المنظمة تخبئ نوايا شريرة، و بعدها ساعدت آدم على الهروب و ذهبا لبيت صديقه في العسكرية و كانت معه امرأة اسمها ماريا و هي أخت سارة، عندئد اكتشفت سارة أنه تم اختطافها لأنها كانت عبقرية و لها أبحاث لحل معادلة الزمن و المنظمة قتلت أباها و محت ذاكرتها، فقررت أن تساعد آدم ليغير ماضيهما فنجح في العودة للماضي بعد عدة عراقيل و منع اغتيال والديه و حذر والد سارة، و عندما رجع للمستقبل و جد والديه معه و ذهب لمنزل سارة فوجدها أيضا مع عائلتها لكنها لا تتذكره...
