قال بعض أكابر النقشبندية: معرفة صفات المشايخ السابقين ربما تكون أنفع للمريد من رؤية أشخاصهم، وذلك لأنه قد يكون غليظ البشرية فلا ينفذ إذا رآهم إلى ما أعطاهم الحق تعالى من سر الخصوصية. وقد جمعنا لهذا المهام العظيم الشأن كتبًا كثيرة في تواريخ المشايخ وآداب الطريق فارسية وعربية للمتقدمين والمتأخرين من خلص النقشبندية واستخرجنا بتوفيق الله زبدتها واستنبطنا بحمد الله خلاصتها. فمنها "الحدائق الوردية" و"الحديقة الندية"، و"البهجة السنية" و"الرشحات" و"المكتوبات" و"مفتاح المعية" و"كتاب الخادمي". وغير ذلك وسميناه بـ"المواهب السرمدية في مناقب السادة النقشبندية".
