يقدم لنا جاك جودي في هذا الكتاب رؤية مغايرة ومختلفة للشرق والغرب والعلاقة بينهما، فهو يقدم نقدًا ثريًا للآراء التي تفسر تقدم الغرب وتأخر الشرق، مثل القول بأن صعود وتقدم الغرب مرتبط بامتلاك الغربيين لعقلانية حرمت منها كل الشعوب الأخرى، أو هى ليست متاحة لغير الغربيين، فيرى هو عكس ذلك ويقول أن العقلانية هى بصورة عامة سمة وخاصية تتسم بها الثقافات كلها، وكذلك استعرض جاك جودي الآراء التي تقسم العالم إلى شرق وغرب وقدم لها نقدًا لاذعًا فهو يرى أن هذا التصنيف خطأ كبير من ضمن الأخطاء التي وقع فيها الفكر الأوروبي. كما يسرد الكثير من هذه المقولات ويحللها بدقة، فهو لا يرى أن الغرب بمثابة كيان عقلاني متفوق بشكل دائم، ولا يرى أن الشرق كيان متخلف بشكل دائم.
ويبدأ جاك جودي الكتاب بالحديث عن المنطق الأرسطي واليوناني، ويقدم نقدًا للفكر الأوروبي حول هذا المنطق، ويشكك في كونه هو الذي أدى إلى التقدم العلمي في الغرب، ويسرد لنا العديد من الأنماط المعرفية في الكثير من البلاد الأخرى، والتي سبقت تطور المعرفة الإغريقية، فهو كتاب ماتع جدًا حيث حطم الآراء المعلبة التي تحدثت عن تخلف الشرق.
