يكشف هذا الكتاب المدعوم بحجج متينة عن الدور الرئيسي الذي لعبه الإسلام في التاريخ الأوروبي. وبتتبع حركة الشعوب والثقافة والدين من الشرق إلى الغرب. يسقط غودي التناقض المدرك بين الإسلام وأوروبا، مظهراً الإسلام كجزء من ماضي أوروبا وحاضرها. وفي تحليل تاريخي للصراع الديني والهجرة القسري، يتفحّص المؤلف مفهومنا للعنف الشعري والتطهير العرقي والإرهاب. وتظهر رؤيته المقارنة تبصّراً مضيئاً مهماً في المشاكل السياسية والنزاعات.
يرسم غودي ثلاثة سبل للإسلام نحو أوروبا، متتبعاً العرب عبر أفريقيا الشمالية وإسبانيا وأوروبا البحرسطية، والأتراك عبر اليونان والبلقان، والمغول عبر روسيا الجنوبية وبولونيا ولتوانيا. وقد تركت كل حركة بصماتها على أوروبا من حيث عدد السكان والثقافة. فلم يكن هذا مجرّد تصادم عسكري، وبنوع خاص في إسبانيا وأماكن أخرى، فقد تبدلت أوروبا جوهرياً بفضل هذا الاحتكاك. ويأخذ اليوم شكل أحد عشر مليوناً من المهاجرين، بقطع النظر عن الاندماج الممكن لملايين أخرى عبر البوسنة وألبانيا وتركيا.
