- الرواية معنية بالأجواء الريفية، من خلال تناول واقع الحياة، في إحدى قرى الدلتا، كجزء من مصر يتأثر بما تتأثربه، من متغيرات جذرية، طالت كل مناحي الحياة، سلبا وإيجابا، فالشوك قرين الياسمين، داخل المجتمع الواحد، بل داخل الشخص الواحد، ومن أراد الياسمين عليه أن يحذر شوك أغصانه، إذ يبحث (مايكل) بطل الرواية، في أصول هذه المتغيرات، ومظاهرها، وتأثيرها على الحياة، بحلوها ومرها، عبر بضعة عقود فائتة، وحتى قبيل ثورة يناير 2011، وإظهار رؤية الكاتب، تجاه بعض الأجيال، آخرها جيل بطل الرواية المثقف، أكثر المتعلمين بعائلته وربما بقريته، التي يلجأ أفرادها إليه، عند أي مأزق، ووجوده في مواجهة قوى الفساد والتطرف والتخلف، التي تريد السيطرة والتحكم في حيوات ومصائر الخلق، يدور ذلك عبر لغة راقية خالية من التقعر، عبر أجواء مناسبة، وشخوص من لحم ودم، دون تفريق بين هيئاتهم أومعتقداتهم أومهنهم، خصوصا الجادين في السعي للرزق الحلال، واثقين في سعي مايكل الدءوب، إلى مساعدتهم، ومساعدة أبنائهم، ليكونوا قادرين، على استيعاب المستجدات، ومواجهة الصعوبات، والصمود في مواجهة أية محاولة، لجذبهم نحو التخلف، بأي شكل من أشكاله، سواء الفكري أوالسلوكي، والأمر طبعا لايغني، عن معارضين من أصحاب المصالح والمغرضين والفاسدين، الذين يرون في التنوير، وإعمال العقل والاعتماد على العلم، خطرا داهما عليهم.
