ما أنت حين تتصفح رواية "الحج إلى واشنطن" بقارئ بل أنت مسافر حقاً سفراً في المكان براً وبحراً وجواً، وفي الزمان ماضياً وحاضراً ومستقبلاً، سفراً بين دروب شتى من المعرفة فكراً وفلسفة وأدباً وديناً وإعلاماً وسياسة وتاريخاً وعلم اجتماع واقتصاد، فالأثر الذي بين يدي "يأخذ من كل شئ بطرف" (أو ليس هذا مفهوم الأدب؟) حيث تحضر بوضوح مواقف الراوي من الراهن الحياتي في كل تجلياته ومستوياته، مواقف من العولمة / الفقر / التنظيمات السياسية / أشكال النضال / الأحداث العالمية الأخيرة / أحداث 11 سبتمبر ونتائجها / الحرب على العراق ولبنان.
إن الرواية نسيج تحرك خيوطه مجموعة من الثنائيات المتقابلة: الذاتي / الموضوعي، الواقعي / المتخيل، السردي / التقدمي، اليمني / اليساري، الفكري / اليومي، الماضي / الحاضر، الممكن / الممتنع، الموجود / المنشود.. ولعل ما أثرى هذا العمل الإبداعي ما حواه من تضمينات نسبها الراوي إلى أصحابها، وكانت بحق في مواطنها دون تعسف أو إسقاط، وإذا كان لأحلام مستغانمي "ذاكرة جسدها" فإن للمهدي عثمان "ذاكرة ألوانه" وهي باكورة أعماله الروائية، ورواية "الحج إلى واشنطن" هي ثاني رواياته، ومت من شك في أننا ننتظر ما ستجود به قريحته، حتى يثري الساحة الأدبية عموماً والروائية خصوصاًبآثار تدير إليها الرقاب المولعين بمشاغل الأدب وتستفز القراء والنقاد.
