كانت فتاة جميلة سوداء الشعر فى نحو الثامنة عشرة من عمرها بيد أنها تضع المساحيق بإسراف على وجهها ، نظرت إلى بشيء من الخجل ، وتقول: أوه يالحسرتى ماذا فعلت؟ لقد صدمت هذا السيد المهذب ، حقيقة لم تكن عبارتى جيدة ، إننى أعتذر فهى لا تليق بسيدة محترمة ، ولكنى حقيقة أستميحك عذراً فإنى فقدت أختى فى الزحام ، قلت: حقاً؟ يا للأسف ، فقالت وهذه المرة كأن فى كلامها شيء من السخرية: إنه غير راض عنى ، ولا عن أختى هذا السيد ، وأعتبر هذا من عدم المبالاة الظالمة ، لأنه لم يرها ، حاولت أن أجيبها، فقالت: لا تقل شيئاً ليس لى فى هذه الدنيا من يحبنى.. لسوف أعيش فى الغابة وآكل ورق الشجر ، فلم يعد لى أمل فى هذه الحياة ، وتحطمت كل آمالى.
