تجسدت طموحات الكاتب من خلال السائق جوان الذي يأخذ راكبيه المختلفين عبر الريف من طريق لآخر ، ماراً بالطرق والجسور التى اكتسحتها المياه عابراً الطرق الخلفية التى نساها البشر حتى يصل أخيراً الى سان جوان التى تصبح جزءاً من الكاتب والسائق والقارئ معاً . وهناك تصميمان رئيسيان لهذه الرواية هما تجميع الأشخاص وتفاعل كل منهم مع الآخر ثم الرحلة الفعلية للأتوبيس وقد تماسك التصميم على صعيد الاشخاص ، من خلال مؤشرات انسانية تفاعلت وانحلت في سلسلة من الحورات التى دارت خلال ساعات قليلة مما يؤكد أن هذه الرواية اكثر اهتماماً بالحركة على صعيد الأشخاص بخلاف معظم روايات شتاينبك الاخرى .
