ولد جون شتاينبيك في ساليناس، كاليفورنيا في 1902، بعد أن درس العلوم في جامعة ستانفورد عمل بنجاح كعامل وبائع في دكان وحارس وقاطف فواكه ومسلح. كانت روايته الأولى: كوب من ذهب (1929) عن القرصان مورجان. وتروي روايته كرم الغضب (1939)، وأكثلر روايته شعبية، عن عائلة مهاجرة تبحث عن العمل في كاليفورنيا، وقد منحت جائزة بوليتزر، وقورنت في تأثيرها برواية: كوخ العم توم. وتتضمن رواياته الأخرى شرقي عدن، فئران ورجال، اللؤلؤة، يوم خميس حلو، وشارع معامل التعليب. وأصدر مجموعات قصصية قصيرة ويوميات رواية، ورسائل شرقي عدن، ومنح شتايبيك جائزة نوبل للآداب في 1962. وقد مات في 1968.
وروايته التي بين يدينا هي من أجمل روايته إذ أنه يخلط فيها بين معاناة مزارعين يداعب خيالهما حلم امتلاك مزرعة بماساة أليمة تزيد من وطأة الظلم على النفوس.
