هذا مقتطفات من كتاب الإمتاع والمؤانسة لأبي حيان التوحيدي، واسمه علي بن محمد بن العباس (414هـ)، وهو فيلسوفٌ متصوفٌ، وأديبٌ بارعٌ من أعلام القرن الرابع الهجري، ولد في بغداد لأسرةٍ فقيرةٍ، فعانى شَطَفَ العيش، ومرارَة الحرمان.
دَرَس علوم القرآن الكريم والفقه والفلسفة والمنطق، وعلوم اللغة والبلاغة والعروض والشعر، وامتهن في شبابه حرفة الوراقة، التي زوَّدته بكم هائل من المعرفة جعلته مثقفاً موسوعياً.
فإن موضوعات الكتاب متنوعةٌ تنوعاً ظريفاً، وهي لا تخضع لترتيبٍ أو تبويبٍ، وإنما تخضع لخطرات العقل وطيران الخيال وشجون الحديث، حتى لنجد في الكتاب مسائل من كل علمٍ وفنِّ؛ من أدبٍ وفلسفةٍ وحيوانٍ وأخلاقٍ وطبيعةٍ وبلاغةٍ وتفسيرٍ وحديثٍ ولغةٍ وسياسة، وتحليل شخصيات فلاسفة العصر وأدبائه وعلمائه.
يلقي الكتاب الضوء على العراق في النصف الثاني من القرن الرابع الهجري، أي: في عصر الدولة البويهية؛ إذ يقف في تضاعيف حديثه على الشؤون الإجتماعية، فيصف الأمراء والوزراء ومجالسهم، كابن عباد وابن العميد وابن سعدان، ومحاسنهم ومساوئهم، ويعرض كذلك الحياة السياسية في الدولة، واصفاً حالة الناس، ومواقفهم من الأمراء، وإضطراب أمورهم وأسبابه.
