كيف ينظر المستشرقون إلى (الإسلام) ويقرأون حضارته وتاريخه وتعاليمه هو الموضوع الذي نجد الإجابة عليه عند واحد من المستشرقين الفرنسيين، وفي هذا الكتاب وهو "هنري ماسيه" (ولد سنة 1886 وتوفي سنة 1969م9 والكتاب من ترجمة بهيج شعبان، وقدم له سماحة الدكتور مصطفى الرافعي وسماحة الشيخ محمد جواد مغنية.
اعتبر الدكتور مصطفى الرافعي أن هذا السفر القيم أتى في بعض أبوابه خارجاً عن مألوف المسلمين، ومغايراً لبعض الفروع الفقهية، وضارباً بعرض الحائط ما تنطوي عليه بعض أحكام الدين أو عمل الرسول الكريم، ويعتمد مؤلفه على آراء زملاء له أمثال "غولدزيهر" و"نولدكه" و"ستوك" وآخرون، ألا أنه يحسب له التسلسل التاريخي.
أما الشيخ مغنية فقد ركز على ما ذكرته كتب التراجم والسِّير عن "الحسن" ابن الإمام علي رضي الله عنهما، حول مبايعته لمعاوية وشروط الصلح وأسبابه...
اما المؤلف فقد ركز على بدايات ظهور الإسلام ونزول الرسالة والتبشير بها وتثبيت القرآن الكريم وتاريخه قبل الهجرة وبعده، ثم إنتشار العقيدة وماهية العبادة في الإسلام وظهور الفرق والمذاهب والملل والنحل (الخوارج، المرجئة، الشيعة، المهدية، القرامطة والإسماعيلية، المعتزلة، الأشعرية، الصوفية)، وغيرها، يتبع ذلك الحركات المناوءة و"رد الفعل البربري في أفريقيا الشمالية (المرابطون، الموحدون) ورد الفعل التركي في آسيا (السلجوقيون والمغول)، وصولاً إلى العصور الحديثة وظهور المذهب الوهابي والبابية والبهائية ومذهب توحيد الآراء (المذهب العصري).
