إن كتاب "الإسلام"، من حيث الموضوع ومن حيث المقاصد، يُعدّ الكتاب المرجعي لمؤلّفات فضل الرحمن وأطروحاته في مجال النظر في قضايا الفكر الإسلامي المعاصر وإتجاهاته، إذ يرسم خريطة ترشدنا إلى عالم مفاهيم فضل الرحمن وجذور أفكاره ونواتها الجنينية، خاصة بعد التغييرات المهمّة التي حدثت في العالم الإسلامي مثل إستعمال الثروة النفطية لنشر المذاهب الدينية المحافظة والمتزمّتة، والتسييس المتزايد للدين في العالم الإسلامي.
إن هذا الكتاب أشبه بسياحة كبرى في فضاء التراث الإسلامي؛ فعلى المستوى التاريخي يغطي الكتاب أربعة عشر قرناً من التطوّرات الإجتماعية والسياسية والفكرية، من بداية الدعوة الإسلامية في مكّة والمدينة إلى الإسلام اليوم في أواخر القرن العشرين، وفي مضارب العالم الإسلامي المختلفة.
يتعرّض الكتاب في فصوله الأربعة عشر، وبطريقة تحليلية تُزاوج بين العرض الموضوعي والتمثّل التفسيري أو التأويلي، إلى: القرآن الكريم، والنبي والوحي النبوي، وعلم الحديث، والفقه، والكلام "الجدلي" ومفهوم الشريعة، والدين، والحركة الفلسفية، والتصوّف وتنظيماته وتاريخه على المستوى النظري والعملي، والفرق الإسلامية وتطوّرها، والتربية والتعليم ومدارسهما في الإسلام، وحركة الإصلاح ما قبل الحداثي، والحركات الإصلاحية الحداثية.
وأخيراً النظر في التراث، وفي المنظورات المستقبلية في الإسلام وتأثيره، وكل ذلك من منظور عقلاني يتأمّل ماضي الإسلام وحاضره ويرصد مستقبله توقُّعاً وإستشرافاً.
