يعنى بيتر هاينه في كتابه هذا بتقديم أهم المفاصل التاريخية التي شكلت الحراك الفكري والسياسي والثقافي في الإسلام، ويتبعُ منهجاً علمياً يقوم على الفصل بين ما هو ديني متعلق بالبنى والمرتكزات العقائدية والشرعية، التي يقوم عليها الدين الإسلامي، وبين ما هو إجتماعي متأسس في العقل الجمعي، الخاضع بطبيعة الحال لمكونات الهوية الثقافية وما ترتكز عليه من أرضيات.
ويلتمسُ القارئ للكتاب، في السياقات المختلفة لتحليل المراحل التاريخية التي مرَّ بها الإسلام، معرفة حقيقية عميقة ورصينة بواقع الثقافة الإسلامية، فضلاً عن الحرص على تناول الإسلام بشكل متكامل غير مقصور على طائفة أو منظور معين.
ولم يكن المؤلف منصرفاً لتشييد نقاط الإختلاف أو القطيعة بين الثقافة الإسلامية وسواها من الثقافات، كما أنشأ رهطٌ غير قليل من الدارسين الغربيين الذين عنوا بدراسة الإسلام، وفي الوقت ذاته نجده يردُ وفي غير موضع على التصورات الغربية الخاطئة عن الديانة الإسلامية واقعاً أو تاريخاً، على إن هذا لا يقوده بالضرورة لتبني موقف المتضامن أو المتحمس، لا سيما وأنَّه لا يغض النظر عن تشخيص عناصر الجمود، وإنتقادها بحدة.
