"بدأتُ ذات صباح مبكّراً بنقل قرية النمل. آن الأوان. لم يعد هذا الأمر قابلاً للتأجيل.
كنتُ أنزع طبقات متتالية، رفشاً إثر رفش، إلى أن تمتلئ العربة اليدويّة. بغتةً اصطدم الرّفش بشيء ما أحدث ما يشبه الرنين. وبعدما رفعت كميّة أخرى من إبر الصنوبر والنمل، اتّضح لي أنّها كانت إحدى زجاجات آرييت الفارغة. كان في داخلها لفافة ورقيّة. سحبتها وفردتها. كانت صورة لنا نحن الاثنين، ملتقطة في الأيّام الأخيرة من علاقتنا، حين كنّا شابّين...
قلبتُ الصورة، كانت آرييت قد رسمت على ظهرها خريطة تمثّل جزيرتي. وكتبت تحتها: وصلنا حتّى هذه النقطة.
ذهبتُ وجلستُ في المطبخ وغرقتُ لوقت طويل في تأمّل الصورة. ثمّ واصلتُ نقل النمال صوب حياتها الجديدة. عند المساء، كان كلّ شيء منتهياً. كانت قرية النمل قد نُقِلتْ.
ذهبتُ في جولة على جزيرتي. كانت الطيور المهاجرة تحوم فوق البحر. كان الأمر كما كتبتْ آرييت. كنّا قد وصلنا حتّى هذه النقطة."
