عاش جيرمي نعيماً رائعاً حتى أعلن عن سقوط روما موسوليني الذي قتل مع عشيقته في تقليد أوروبي قديم حديث توَّجه الفوهرر بنفسه. كشف عن الحقيقة البشعة. «أنا مقاتل أمريكي». هكذا قال. وقد تعرف عليه رفاقه من الفرقة العاشرة. كانوا ثملين حد الخرف. ولكنهم عرفوه: «جيرمي، أهذا أنت أيها الإيطالي القذر؟ كيف تركت صقلية؟». بدا فرحاً متناسياً ما اقترفوه في حقه من سيئات. طلب من قائده أن يأخذه إلى نيويورك، قائلا بأن لديه أقارب هناك، لكن القائد رفض طلبه بعد مشاورة سريعة مع قائد آخر: «اسمع يا إيطاليو، أنت كنت مع موسوليني، صورك والأكاليل التي غمروك بها صارت معروفة، اسمع أنت كنت لتكون أمريكياً عظيماً ولكننا لا نستقبل النازيين والفاشيين ولا حتى الشيوعيين، نحن لن نأخذك معنا أنت لم تقدم ما يساعدك على ذلك يا بني».
