ولد هنينغ مانكل سنة 1948، فاز بأول جائزة في السويد عن أفضل كتاب للشباب عام 1990: "جسر إلى النجوم"، وهو الكتاب نفسه الذي منحه درع نيلس هولجرسون 199، وجائزة أدبيّة خاصة بأدب الشباب في ألمانيا 1993.
قبل ذلك استطاع هنينغ مانكل تحقيق شهرته كروائي وكاتب مسرحي للكبار.
ولديه نتاج أدبي واسع من المسرحيّات والروايات، حين كتب للأطفال والشباب بدت كتاباته متماسكة وقريبة من مشاعر الناس؛ قصص هي غاية في الرقّة والغنائيّة والمشاعر السخيّة، أبطاله أناس أحياء يخطون على حواف الحرائق التي رسمت على بيئتهم، ومؤلفاته الغنية حافلة بالأحداث والصور والمشاعر، وهي تصلح للصغار والكبار معاً.
