"قاتل بلا وجه" هي الرواية الأولى في سلسلة الروايات البوليسية المشوقة التي الّفها الكاتب السويدي على ضوء شخصية المفتش "كورت فالاندر" المحببة والمتخيلة.
في قلب الريف السويدي، وفي مزرعة منعزلة، تكتشف جريمة قتل مزدوجة لزوجين من المزارعين المتقاعدين الذين عذباً وقتلاً بوحشية. كان من الممكن للموضوع أن يكون قضية قتل كغيرها، لولا أن المرأة العجوز وهي على فراش الموت في المستشفى تلفظت بكلمة واحدة قبل موتها، وهي"غريب"، مما أثار الكثير من اللغط، ومن ردات الفعل العنيفة في المنطقة المحيطة والمجاورة، وموجة من الحقد والعنف ضد طالبي اللجوء السياسي في معسكر للاجئين، ومما فضح الكثير الكثير من الحقائق، وكشف النقاب عن مشكلة كبيرة يعاني منها المجتمع السويدي، كما كل المجتمعات الأوروبية، وهي مشكلة التعصّب والتمييز العنصري.
سيحاول المفتش فالاندر في أول مهمة له، مواجهة هذا المد العنيف الساخن من أعمال العنف العنصرية، بروح منفتحة، وذهن متقد، وأعصاب باردة، كما سيحاول التحرك بسرعة لإيقافه، وذلك بالتزامن مع مواجهة أخرى شخصية وقاسية كان عليه القيام بها، وهي استيعاب مسألة واقع طلاقه من زوجته، وما ينتج عنها من مشاكل وصراعات في العلاقات بين أفراد العائلة، ومن إحساس بالتمزق والوحدة.
هذا التلازم بين الوضعين العام والخاص، الذي يحبكه الراوي بذكاء وحنكة، وبأسلوب جميل مميز، يضفي على الأحداث واقعية ملموسة، وعلى الشخصيات ملامح إنسانية حية، ضمن تركيبته العامة الناقدة بقسوة، والتي تتناسب مع شدة إدانته للفكر العنصري ولممارسات التعصب ولكل أشكال التمييز بين البشر.
رواية بوليسية بامتياز تشد القارئ بعناصرها المترابطة والمركّبة تركيبا جيدا، وبشخصياتها الحيّة، خصوصا شخصية المفتش فالاندر الذي سيتعاطف معه القارئ لطابعه الشخصي ولإنسانيته وحسه الاستكشافي، ولذكائه ورغبته في التقصي والمعرفة.
