لا يكاد التراث الشعبي لأيِّ أمة يخلو من القصص والمأثورات التي تعكس قِيَم المجتمع وفلسفته وتُبْرِزُ هُوَيَّتَهُ، كما أن هذه الحكايات المُسَلِّيَة هي إحدى أهم الأساليب، التي تتناقل بها الأجيالُ المعرفةَ ويَبُثُّ الأجدادُ فضائلَ السلوك في الأحفاد بشكل سهل مُبَسَّط؛ فأحيانًا ما تكون قصصًا خيالية قصيرة، شُخُوصها هي حيوانات عاقلة متكلمة (كما في «قصص كليلة ودمنة» الشهيرة و«حكايات أيسوب») أو بين البشر وبعضهم، وقد انتقى الأديب الروسي الساخر «إيفان كريلوف» بعضًا من الحكايات الشعبية الروسية الشهيرة ذات المغزى الفلسفي والأخلاقي ليُقَدِّمها في هذا الكتاب الذي عَرَّبَ مادَّتَه اللبنانيُّ «إلياس أنطون»، بحيث تكون قريبةً ومألوفة لِذَوْق القارئ العربي.
