يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن سيرة حياة أبي ذر الغفاري واسمه أبو ذر، جندب بن جنادة الغفاري، والكتاب كما يذكر المؤلف السيد جعفر مرتضى العاملي استله من كتاب "الصحيح من سيرة الإمام علي" والغاية منه "فنحن نقدم هذا النص الذي يعالج تهمة باطلة ألصقها أهل الباطل لهذا الصحابي الجليل، لدوافع رخيصة تزري بأصحابها، ولا تليق بأهل النبل والكرامة...".
ومن التهم التي يشير إليها المؤلف موقفه من تدخلات اليهود وأحبارهم في شؤون المسلمين وقراراتهم وإعتراضه على سيرة الحكام في بيت مال المسلمين، وعلى ممارسات أخرى ظالمة، أو غير مشروعة وكذلك نشره لفضائل أمير المؤمنين، ولكن الشيء المهم الذي يناقشه المؤلف هو ما كان من مذهب أبي ذر "تحريم إدخار ما زاد على نفقة العيال؛ وكان يفتي بذلك، ويحثهم عليه، ويأمرهم به، ويغلط في خلافه" الأمر الذي أدى إلى خلاف مع حكام عصره في الشام ونفيه إلى المدينة وكان ذلك في خلافة عثمان.
وفي الكتاب يستعرض المؤلف مختلف وجهات النظر والمواقف لفتوى أبي ذر بخصوص إدخار المال ومنهم رأي ابن الأثير وأبو هلال العسكري وابن كثير والشوكاني، والآلوسي ولجنة الفتوى بالأزهر والرصافي وأحمد أمين... وآخرون.
أما عن رأي المؤلف فهو: "أنه لم يكن له رأي يخالف ما عليه جمهور الصحابة، وتنطق به ضرورة الإسلام، والقرآن الكريم...".
