ابن تيمية هو تقي الدين أبو العباس أحمد بن عبد الحليم بن عبد السلام النميري الحراني المشهور بابن تيمية، فقيه وعالم مسلم مجتهد شديد التأثر بأصول مذهب الإمام أحمد بن حنبل، وتميزت أعماله باعتماد نص الكتاب والحديث وترجيحه على العقل والقياس، وربط قيام الدين بالإمارة وعدّها من أعظم واجبات الدين.
ساهم ببلورة عقيدة الجهاد وأعلى من شانها لمنزلة الأركان، فتركت آثاره صدى واسع في القرن العشرين لدى من انتسبوا إلى "الإسلام السياسي" أو الحركي وقسم الجهاد إلى قسمين هما جهاد الابتداء أو الاختيار و عدّه فرض كفاية وجهاد الدفع أو الاضطرار وعدّه فرض عين، ورأى وجوب قتال كل من بلغته الدعوة ولم يستجب لها، فشارك في قتال التتار الذين ظهرو في فترته بالمشرق، كما قاتل الطوائف الشيعية والإسماعيلية وأفتى بوجوب قتال كل طائفة "ممتنعة عن شريعة من شرائع الإسلام".
يتحدّث الكاتب هنا عن ابن تيمية في كتاب تمَّ تقسيمه الى قسمين: الأول بعنوان عصره وحياته ومنهجه، والثاني بعنوان آراؤه في الدين والحياة.
