قليلٌ من العلماء قد يحاول مساءلة النظرية؛ لتبوح له بالفلسفة التي تقف وراءها. إدنجتون من هؤلاء القلة. إدنجتون الفلكي والرياضي والفيزيائي الشهير، أول من أثبت النظرية النسبية العامة لأينشتاين، أول من كتب عنها في الإنجليزية، أشاد به أينشتاين نفسه حين قال أن ما كتبه هو أدق ما كتب عن النسبية في أي لغة. أسهم في تطوير الهندسة اللاإقليدية التي ساعدت كثيرا في تقديم هندسة صالحة لفهم العالم في ضوء النظرية النسبية نفسها. لم يتوقف به الأمر عند ذلك بل كانت له دراساته الخاصة العديدة عن نشأة النجوم وتطورها وحركتها وتركيبها. لقد عاصر إدنجتون أكبر ثورتين في العلم الحديث (النظرية النسبية ونظرية الكم)، في هذا الكتاب لا يكتفي إدنجتون برصد الفلسفات التي قادت إلى النظريتين أو الفلسفات التي أسفرت عنهما النظريتان بل يحاول رسم صورة عامة كاملة للكون علميا وفلسفيا، بل لا يقف طموحه عند ذلك الحد فنجده يحاول الخلوص لنظرية كل شيء في حماس ودأب وشجاعة.
