هذا كتاب مختلف لأن مؤلفه مختلف ولأن فكرته قد بزغت في ظرف مختلف كذلك.
إدنجتون الفلكي والرياضي والفيزيائي الشهير، أول من أثبت النظرية النسبية العامة لأينشتاين، أول من كتب عنها في الإنجليزية، أشاد به أينشتاين نفسه حين قال أن ما كتبه هو أدق ما كتب عن النسبية في أي لغة. أسهم في تطوير الهندسة اللاإقليدية التي ساعدت كثيرا في تقديم هندسة صالحة لفهم العالم في ضوء النظرية النسبية نفسها. لم يتوقف به الأمر عند ذلك بل كانت له دراساته الخاصة العديدة عن نشأة النجوم وتطورها وحركتها وتركيبها، كما كان من أوائل المتحمسين لنظرية الكم.
هذا جانب أما الجانب الآخر فقد كان إدنجتون متدينا شديد الإيمان وعضوا في جماعة دينية بروتستانتية ومتحدثا لبقا قادر على إيصال أعقد الأفكار ويبدو أن الكتاب بين أيدينا هو نتاج أفكار محتدمة كانت تعمل في رأسه فجاءت الفصول الأحد عشر الأولى علمية خالصة، تحاول شرح وتفسير أهم نظريات العلم الحديث وتداعيات نظريتي النسبية والكم وجاءت الفصول الأربعة الأخيرة فلسفية ميتافيزيقة بل صوفية أحيانا، تحاول الإجابة عن الأسئلة الكبرى في ضوء معايير وتوجهات تلك النظريات الحديثة.
كما أشرنا، لقد بزغت فكرة هذا الكتاب في ظرف مختلف؛ حيث كان في البداية عبارة عن محاضرات ألقيت ضمن محاضرات جيفورد وهي مجموعة محاضرات سنوية، تعد أحد أهم الأحداث التي تقيمها الأكاديمية الإسكتلندية وأعلاها شرفا وتكريما، تلقى هذه المحاضرات في عدة جامعات إسكتلندية، وموضوعها الأساسي اللاهوت الطبيعي حيث تُعنى بالتأسيس لوجود الله بناء على الاستدلال المنطقي والخبرة العادية بالطبيعة.
في هذا الكتاب نجد إخلاصا شديدا للعلم ورؤية ثاقبة في فلسفته ونجد كذلك إنسانا حائرا يريد أن يستفيد بكل ما عرف كي يجيب عن أسئلة كبرى لطالما أرقته.
