يبدأ هنري لوفيفر كتابه " المادية الجدلية " بمقولة الفيلسوف العظيم هيجل في مؤلفه " ظاهريات الروح ": " ليست حياة الروح هي تلك الحياة التي تفزع في مواجهة الموت وتنأى بنفسها بعيدة عن كل فساد، ولكنها الحياة التي تتحمل حضور الموت داخل نطاقها، وتحتفظ بنفسها حية داخل نطاق الموت كان هنري لوفيفر فيلسوفا وعالم اجتماع فرنسي. درس الفلسفة كطالب في جامعة السوربون وتخرج منها في عاما 1920.انضم في عام 1924 إلى مجموعة من الفلاسفة الذي كان هدفهم إحداث ثورة فلسفية، وهذا جعل لوفيفر أيضا على علاقة بالحركتين السريالية والدادائية قبل أن ينتمي للحزب الشيوعي الفرنسي. بعد أن انضم هنري لوفيفر في عام 1928 إلى الحزب الشيوعي الفرنسي، أصبح أحد أهم المفكرين الماركسيين خلال الربع الثاني من القرن العشرين ومن قبل انضمامه إلى المقاومة الفرنسية ضد النازي خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية واحتلال النازيين لفرنسا. كان هنري لوفيفر غزير الإنتاج ويعد هذا الكتاب " المادية الجدلية " من أهم كتبه على الإطلاق متضمنا نقد الجدل الهيجلي والمادية التاريخية والمادية الجدلية كما يناقش إنتاج الإنسان عبر الحتمية الفيزيائية والحتمية الاجتماعية وغيرها حتي يصل إلى الإنسان الشامل.
