In February 1922 Gertrude Bell wrote to her family from Baghdad, ''I've gone back now to the wild feeling of joy in existence - I'm happy in feeling that I've got the love and confidence of a whole nation, a very wonderful and absorbing thing.''
The nation she rejoiced in was Iraq, whose tribal chiefs knew her simply as Al Khatun, ''the Lady''.
Gertrude Bell's personal life was lived as a series of passionate yet unfulfilled emotional attachments. Her professional career by contrast, is one of relentless endeavour and high achievement in a world where she was a rare representative of her sex. After a starred first in history from Oxford she joined the Arab Bureau as the first woman officer in the British military intelligence service, and was sent to Baghdad as the head of the Iraq branch in 1915. She died there eleven years later.
Gertrude's legacy lives in her letters, her photographs, her political reports and perhaps most vividly, in her travel books, which reveal the courage of a lone woman adventurer. She is also celebrated as the founder of the National Museum of Iraq, and the country's first Director of Antiquities.
H.V.F. Winstone's absorbing biography of Gertrude Bell was the first full-scale account of her life when it was published in 1978. Since then it has been reprinted many times. In this revised edition, the author sheds fresh light on Gertrude's life, and on recent events in Iraq.
