في هذا الكتاب يكشف سليم مجاعص عن دور (جر ترود باري) في حياة خليل جبران العاطفية المرأة العاشقة لجبران لأكثر من سنين، تلك الموسيقية البارعة وعازفة البيانو المولودة عام 1881 التي حظيت بتدريب كلاسيكي عالٍ في الموسيقى في أفضل المعاهد الأوربية. أما الإشارة العلنية الوحيدة إلى هذه العلاقة في حياة جبران كانت بحسب المؤلف في نص رسالة من جرترود باري إلى سليم سركيس وقد نشرها هذا الأخير مترجمة في مجلة سركيس الصادرة في مصر.
يستعرض الكتاب رسائل جبران، ورسائل سركيس إلى جرترود باري، وهي مادة ومراحل تطورها وتحولاتها. ويدخل في تفاصيل شخثية هذه المرأة التي عشقها جبران، كما يصرح، وعشقها سركيس، كما يبدو لنا، وأعجب بها شبلي الشميل وغيره في مصر، كما يخبرنا سركيس في هذا الكتاب، كما تمكننا هذه المادة الوثائقية من سبر عواطف جبران ومشاعره بدقةٍ أكثر من مرحلة عبوره من وهج حبه لجوزفين بيبودي إلى صداقته وشراكته الفكرية مع ماري هاسكل وغيرها، فما لا شك فيه أن الرسائل المترجمة تؤكد أن جبران كان يجمع أكثر من حبيبة في وقت واحد، فيتذرع مرات كثيرة بالمرض أو السفر أمام جاترود باري فيما يكون في زيارة إلى ماري هاسكل. كما تتيح الرسائل أيضاً التقاط زوايا من طريقة تفاعل جبران مع مدن أميركية كبرى مثل بوسطن أو نيويورك: "أنا أحب نيويورك لأن روحاً قوية جبارة تسكن هنا، ثمة عنصر إيجابي في نيويورك، وهو عنصر غير معروف في بوسطن". وفي واحدة من الرسائل، نقرأ اعترافاً عن بداية تقدمه بالعمر: "يا جرترود الحلوة والعزيزة، يا جرترود الرهيبة والشريرة! ألا يكفي أنني بلغت الرابعة والثلاثين فلماذا تزيدي ذلك صعوبة وقسوة، لا أريد أعياد ميلاد إضافية، لقد إكتفيت".
وفي الكتاب يضع المؤلف مادته وفقاً لتتابعها الزمني التعاقبي فيبدأ بالفصل الأول بلمحة عن خلفية جرترود باري وما تمكن هو شخصياً من استقصائه عن حياتها وفنها وبعد ذلك يتناول علاقتها بسليم سركيس. وفي الفصل الثاني يعالج المرحلة العشيقة من علاقتها بجبران قبيل سفره إلى باريس، ثم ينتقل إلى مرحلة الصداقة بينهما التي امتدت من عودته من باريس حتى عام 1922 وهو آخر تاريخ للمراسلات بينهما التي عثر عليها، أما في الفصل الأخير فيتناول التقاطع الزمني بين علاقات جبران المتعددة على المستوى العشقي الشعوري ومدلولات هذا التقاطع.
