تدور الرواية في إطار من الغموض الفني والنفسي، حين يستيقظ بطل الرواية ليجد نفسه ملقى في غرفة غريبة عنه، لا يعرف ولا يتذكر كيف وُضع فيها أو أتى إليها ولا متى، ويفاجأ ببعض الإصابات في جسده تمنعه من الوقوف، ثم يأتي إليه أحدهم ويقنعه بأنه صديقه، ليكتشف البطل فيما بعد أنه تحت التهديد من قبل شخصية مختلة نفسيًا، ثم يتطور اكتشافه أنه في مواجهة مع مجنون متهم بقتل زوجته، فيسعى لإثبات براءته، لكنه يقابل بالعديد من التحديات والأمور الغامضة التي تشبه اللغز، وعليه معرفة الحقيقة قبل أن ينهي المجنون حياته بعد أن حدد له مهلة أسبوعًا يقوم خلاله بارتكاب جريمة من أجله.
تتعقد الخيوط وتتشابك في هذه الرواية المشوقة حتى يقوم الراوي في نهايتها بحل اللغز وفك أسراره وغموضه، بين بطلي الرواية "بيتر وديفيد" حيث تدور الأحداث في أمريكا، وسط أجواء يجيدها الروائي عمرو الجندي المطلع بعمق على الأدب العالمي والعارف بدقائقه واتجاهاته الفنية، الأمر الذي ساعده كثيرًا في دقة تعبيره عن الحيرة الإنسانية، يقول الجندي في بعض سطور الرواية: "ما الذي يفصلنا عن الواقع؟ ما القضية الحقيقية التي حولت حياة البطل ليصبح على ما هو عليه؟ هل يمكن تجنب الخطيئة، وهل يمكن العيش معها؟ وهل النسيان يكون أحيانًا مطلقًا؟ وهل معرفة الحقيقة تشفي أم تدفعنا أحيانًا للانتحار؟".
