يُقصَدُ بـ«المعروضات» في عهد الدولة العثمانية تلك الفتاوى التي يعرضها شيخ الإسلام ـ المفتي العام للدولة ـ على السلطان العثماني، ليعتمدها ويصدر بها مرسومًا يُلزم المفتين في الدولة العملَ بها، وهي فتاوى كان من المصلحة توحيد الإفتاء والحكم بها، لتنتظم أحوال الناس في سائر أرجاء الدولة، لذا أخذت تلك «المعروضات» طابعًا قانونيًّا، وقُدِّمَ ما فيها على غيره من الآراء الفقهية. وقد كان شيخ الإسلام أبو السعود أفندي العمادي (898-982هـ) من الفقهاء المتمرِّسين في الفتيا والقضاء، وكان السلطان سليمان القانوني شديد الإعجاب به، حتى إنه أصدر أمره إلى المفتين والقضاة في الدولة بالتزام فتاويه وعدم الخروج عنها. وكانت لأبي السعود «معروضات» فيها آراؤه التي اعتمد السلطانُ العملَ بها، وصارت مرجعًا للفقهاء والمفتين في عصره وبعده، وهي التي تضمَّن هذا الكتاب تعريبَ نصِّها وتحقيقه، بالاعتماد على نسختين خطيتين، مع إلقاء الضوء على مضامين هذه «المعروضات» وفقهها.
