ولد مصنف هذا الكتاب، أبو السعود محمد بن مصطفى العمادي الحنفي سنة 898هـ بقرية قريبة من قسطنطينية، وقرأ على والده كثيراً، ونهل من العلوم كثيراً، قلد قضاء برسه ثم قضاء قسطنطينية ثم قضاء العسكر في ولاية روم إيلي، وتولى الفتيا فقام بأعبائها أتم قيام وسارت أجوبته في جميع العلوم مسير النجوم. وكان من الذين قعّدوا الفضائل والمعارف، وقد عاقه الدرس والفتوى والاشتغال عن التفرغ و"التصنيف، سوى أنه اختلس فرصاً وصرفها إلى التفسير الشريف، فكان هذا التفسير "تفسير أبي السعود أو إرشاد العقل السليم إلى مزايا الكتاب الكريم" وقد أتى فيه بما لم تسمع به الأذهان. وهو تفسير جليل للقرآن الكريم يحتوي على إعرابات ونكت بلاغية وتفسير مفصل للآيات، وذكر لأسباب النزول، ويمتاز بأنه على مذهب أبي حنيفة النعمان.
وقد ذكره حاجي خليفة في كشف الظنون فقال: "إرشاد العقل السليم إلى مزايا الكتاب الكريم، في تفسير القرآن على مذهب النعمان، لشيخ الإسلام ومفتي الأنام أبي السعود بن محمد العمادي المتوفي سنة 982... اشتهر صيته وانتشر نسخه في الأقطار ووقع التلقي من الفحول والكبار لحسن سبكه ولطعن تعبيره، فصار يقال له خطيب المفسرين، ومن المعلوم أن تفسير أحد سواه بعد الكشاف والقاضي لم يبلغ إلى ما بلغ من رتبة الاعتبار والاشتهار، وألحق أنه حقيق به، مع ما فيه من المنافي لدعوى التنزيه".
