التصحر مشكلة بيئية مركبة تنتج من مجموعة من العوامل الطبيعية والبشرية ذات التأثيرات المتبادلة. وفي السنوات الأخيرة، باتت أبعادها البيئية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية تستفحل في العالم العربي؛ لذا تقتضي المتابعة والرصد المستمرين والبحث العلميالمعمق المتعدد التخصصات على المستوى الأكاديمي النظري والتطبيقي وعلى مستوى صواب وكفاءة اتخاذ القرارات الاقتصادية والاجتماعيةوالسياسية المطلوبة للتعامل معها، وجعلها أيضا ضمن اهتمامات منظمات المجتمع المدني وبالأخص المعنية بالبيئة. وإضافة إلى هذه الأبعاد فإن، لها أبعاد أمنية واستراتيجية وحضارية على المستوى المحلي والإقليمي والعالمي لابد أن تتأثر بها بلداننا العربية حاضرا ومستقبلا. وهي أحدى المعوقات الجدية أمام التنمية المستدامة التي تطمح لها بلداننا للحاق ولو نسبيا بركاب العالم المتقدم. وتتأثر المنطقة العربية بما يحدث في العالم على المستوى البيئي وبالأخص مسببات التغيرات المناخية حيث لا توجد حدود توقف انعكاس تأثيراتها المتبادلة ونتائجها على توسع ظاهرة التصحر.
