وهذا الكتاب مساهمة في سد النقص في هذا الحقل. ولهذه الغاية عكف الكاتب على دراسة تاريخ نيجيريا وبنيتها الإثنية والقبائل المتنازعة والديانات والهجرات وإرث الاستعمار البريطاني الذي كان له شأن كبير في تعميق مشكلات الدولة والمجتمع. ثم عرض لتاريخ الاستعمار وبناء الدولة الحديثة، وتناول الحرب الأهلية في سياق دراسته مسارات التحضر وتوسع المدن والفساد الذي استشرى بقوة في الدولة والمؤسسات. كما تطرق الكتاب إلى نشوء الحركات الإسلامية المتطرفة مثل "بوكو حرام"، وعلاقات نيجيريا بالعالم العربي وإسرائيل، وتعثر بناء دولة المواطنة جراء الإرث الثقيل للاستعمار. ويندرج هذا الكتاب في نطاق الكتابة البلدانية مع التركيز على التاريخ والسكان والاقتصاد والنزاعات الحدودية والصراعات الأهلية.
