تكتسي دراسة هجرة العمالة من بلدان المغرب العربي أهمية كبيرة ومتزايدة، نظرا إلى تاريخها الطويل وحجمها الكبير ودورها المتزايد اقتصاديا واجتماعيا وثقافيا وحتى سياسيا، سواء في البلدان المرسلة للعمالة أو في البلدان المستقبلة لها. وعلى الرغم من ذلك، لا يلقى هذا الموضوع حتى الآن اهتماما بحثيا كافيا في البلدان العربية التي تشملها هذه الظاهرة بقوة، ومنها بلدان المغرب العربي. لذا يأتي هذا الكتاب ليبحث بالأرقام والتحليل، في تطور واتجاهات الهجرة من بلدان المغرب العربي إلى أوروبا وبوجه خاص إلى هولندا، نظرا إلى تزايد تركز انتقال المهاجرين العرب، والمغاربة خصوصا، إليها ؛ فيهتم في دراسة تطورهم عبر الوقت ونمط توزعهم الجغرافي وبنيتهم العمرية والنوعية وتطور مستوى الخصوبة ومعدل الوفيات والبنية العائلية والتعليم والبنية المهنية والاندماج في المجتمع الهولندي والتحويلات، ويسعى لفهم العلاقة المتبادلة بين الهجرة والتنمية الاجتماعية – الاقتصادية، وبصورة خاصة بالنسبة إلى بلدان المغرب العربي.
