يقول كتاب )تاريخ مصر القديمة – للصف الأول الثانوي ( والذي أصدرته وزارة المعارف المصرية سنة 1951 م كمنهج للتاريخ: )وكان الهكسوس يفوقون المصريين في فنون الحرب، بمعرفتهم بالعجلات الحربية، التي كانت تجرها الخيول، التي لم تكن معروفة في مصر وقتئذ، فتخترق صفوف المشاة، وكان لهذا التفوق أثر كبير في هزيمة المصريين، واستولى الهكسوس على مصر بسهولة، وقد ساعدهم على ذلك، ما كانت عليه من ضعف وانحلال بسبب الفتن والحروب الداخلية، وقد اتخذ الهكسوس )أفاريس( عاصمة لهم لتكون وسلط أملاكهم في مصر وسوريا( .. ثم يستطرد نفس المصدر ويقول على مدينة )أفاريس( هذه: )مكانها غير معلوم بالضبط، ومن المرجح أن يكون في شرق الدلتا، قرب بحيرة المنزلة، ولم يبق من آثارها شيء، حتى يتعذر تحديد موقعها؛ لأن المصريين دمروها بعد أن طردوا الهكسوس من بلادهم، وكذلك فعلوا بكل ما خلفوه من آثار، انتقامًا منهم وكراهية لهم(
