تقول المصادر التاريخية الموثقة، لما ضعف ملوك الأسرة الثالثة عشرة، وتفككت البلاد من جراء ما نشب بين أمراء الأقاليم، من نزاع وحروب مستمرة، أغار على مصر قوم آسيويون، اختفت آراء المؤرخين في تحديد أصلهم، وتباينت آراؤهم في أسباب إطلاق اسم (الهكسوس) على هؤلاء القوم، فمن المؤرخين من يقول إن كلمة هكسوس معناها (حكام الرعاة)، إذ تتكون الكلمة من شقين (هك) ومعناها في اللغة الهيروغليفية القديمة (ملك)، والشق الثاني (سوس) أي راعي، وتكتب هكذا Hyksos، ويقول المؤرخون الذين تبنوا هذا الرأي إن المصريين القدماء هم الذين أطلقوا هذا الاسم عليهم بل وزادوا على ذلك بأن وصفوهم برابرة وكفار؛ لأنهم لما غزوا مصر خربوا المعابد وقتلوا النساء والأطفال، وعاملوا الناس بقسوة ووحشية.
ويقول بعض المؤرخين أنه من المرجح أن هؤلاء القوم ساميون من العرب أو فينيقيون، كانوا يحكمون سوريا وفلسطين، ثم غزوا مصر وحكموها، وقد أشار إلى ذلك أحد ملوك هؤلاء القوم، إذ دوَّن اسمه وكلمة أخرى قريبة الشبه في نطقها بكلمة (سوس) sos، ومعناها الأقطار، وعليه يمكن القول بأن كلمة (هكسوس) معناها (حاكم الأقطار)
