في هذا الكتاب يدرس المؤلف الآلية التي تطورت فيها طفولتنا، ويقصد بطفولتنا مرحلة التوراة وما أخذنا عنها من معتقدات [سماوية] ما زالت إلى اليوم، يدرسها وفق المعطيات الجديدة، كيف تطورت وكم من الزمن استغرقت حتى وصلت إلى ما استقرت عليه منذ ما يزيد عن 2500 عاماً.
ينقب في نصوص التوراة متتبعاً مسار الفكر الديني التوراتي من مراحله الأولى التي كان فيها يهوه إله القبائل العبرية البدوية، كأي إله من آلهة قبائل وشعوب منطقة شرق المتوسط، وهو ما كان يدفعهم أحياناً للتخلي عنه والتحول إلى آلهة الشعوب الأخرى لأنها أكثر مقدرة كإله الكنعانيين (بعل) مثلاً، وقد ظل أتباع التوراة زمناً طويلاً حتى جعلوا إلهم يهوه أقوى الآلهة.
وبعد ذلك بقوا زمناً آخر طويلاً حتى توصلوا إلى أنه الإله الأوحد، إله الكون كله، إله جميع الشعوب ولا إله غيره، وهذا ما دفعهم حسبما يرى المؤلف إلى إعادة النظر في المسائل التي طُرِحت قبلاً: علاقة الله بالبشر، بالكائنات الأخرى والغاية من خلقه، وكذلك عملية الخلق، ومسائل الخير والشر، الثواب والعقاب و...
وطالما أنهم هم من وجدوا الإله الأوحد هذا، إذن هم شعبه المختار وذلك كي يحافظوا على مكانتهم.
