يُرجع المختصون أسباب الضعف في مهارة الإملاء لعدة أسباب، من أهمها: ضعف السمع والبصر وعدم القدرة على التمييز بين الأصوات المتقاربة، والضعف في القراءة وعدم التدريب الكافي عليها. وهناك أسباب أخرى تعود على المعلمين أنفسهم الذين يتبعون التصحيح التقليدي لأخطاء الطلبة دون مشاركتهم في تصحيح الأخطاء، والسرعة في إملاء القطعة وعدم الوضوح، وعدم النطق السليم للحروف والحركات، واختيار قطع إملائية طويلة، ما يؤدي إلى التعب والوقوع في الخطأ، وعدم إلمام بعض المعلمين بقواعد الإملاء إلماما كافيا،ً ولا سيما في الهمزات والألف اللينة :يقوم المفهوم الجديد للإملاء على أساس التدريب ، بمعنى أننا نعلم الطالب كتابة الكلمات من خلال عرضها بصريا ، وبالعمل اليدوي ، وباللفظ ، ثم بالكتابة .إن عملية الكتابة الإملائية تقوم على التذكر والاسترجاع ، أي استعادة تذكر الكلمة بأربعة أشكال : أ التذكر السمعي : بسماع الكلمة عدة مرات مع فهم مدلولها – 0 ب التذكر – البصري: برؤية الكلمة مكتوبة 0 ج التذكر النطقي : بالتلفظ بها عدة مرات – 0 د التذكر الحركي : بكتابتها – بالإصبع في الهواء أو برسمها بالقلم 0 وتسمى هذه الطريقة الجديدة ) الوقائية ( لأنها تقي الطالب من الخطأ أو من رؤيته 0
