تنسب كتب التراجم إلى ابن سنان الخفاجي (-٤٦٦هـ) طائفة من المؤلفات لم يصل إلينا منها إلا كتابه "سرّ الفصاحة" وديوان شعره . أما مؤلفاته الأخرى فلدينا أسماؤها ليس غير، إذ لا نعرف أحداً نقل عنها أو ذكر أنه أفاد منها، خلافاً لكتابه "سرّ الفصاحة" الذي كان له أثر واضح في تاريخ الفكر الأدبي عند العرب وهكذا فإنك إذا تناولت ابن سنان مفكراً أو بلاغياً أو ناقداً فإنما تتحدّث عمّا جاء به في هذا الكتاب على وجه التحديد . وهذا البحث محاولة للمشاركة في الجهود الرامية إلى إيضاح ما قدّمه ابن سنان لنظرية الأدب عند العرب، ممّا لعلّه يساعد في بيان موقعه في تاريخ الفكر البلاغي والنقدي. وقد كنت ذهبت في موضع آخر إلى أن الرجل لم يحظ حتى الآن إلا بأقلّ ممّا هو جدير به من عناية الدارسين، ومن المؤمّل أن تبيّن الصفحات القادمة أن ثمّة جوانب في فكر ابن سنان ما زالت في حاجة إلى دراسة وتحليل.
